International snowkite expedition greenland 2007
Greenland is the largest island on Earth. Straddling the Arctic Circle, 80% of the country is permanently encased in ice, creating the second largest ice cap in the world.
The Inland Ice occupies 85% of Greenland's landmass. Covering 1,833,900 km2, it is second only in size to Antarctica's icecap. 2,500km from north to south, and up to 1000 km from east to west.
The first crossing was made by Fridtjof Nansen's team in 1888. Landing on the East Coast, he led his team over to the West Coast in a daring attempt that set the course of 20th century pioneering expeditions.
Evolution, 119 years later, in August 2007 a new extreme expedition will take place. We will follow a new crossing route, starting from the southern tip of Greenland's icecap and heading north to one of the settlements on the West. Starting from the south gives us an opportunity to have more favourable winds and to go faster.
Expedition dates from 27 july to 1st of september 2007
Our goal is to attempt an ice cap crossing for the first time ever with snowboard and kite, also called snowkiting, by hauling all the equipment in a pulka (sled).
Ecological: through this expedition we believe that we have a unique opportunity to help raise awareness of the importance of wind and the energy that can be harnessed from this element. And of course the climate changes in Greenland and the effects on Europe.
